What is Technology?
Technology is the making, usage, and knowledge of tools, machine, techniques, crafts , systems or methods of organization in order to solve a problem or perform a specific function. It can also refer to the collection of such tools, machinery, and procedures. The word technology comes from Greek (technological); f meaning "art, skill, craft". The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include construction technology, medical technology, and information technology.
Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments. The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. Theprehistorical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in traveling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, thetelephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons.
What is Information Technology?
Information technology (IT) is the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics-based combination ofcomputing and telecommunications. The term in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review, in which authors Levitt and Whistler commented that "the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology (IT).". Some of the modern and emerging fields of Information technology are next generation web technologies, bioinformatics,cloud computing, global information systems, large scale knowledgebases, etc.

Create a cost efficient blend of centralization and decentralization of information technology resources - properly aligning the university’s information technology infrastructure to best meet the needs of its teaching, research and outreach missions.
Create a coherent campus-wide information technology computing architecture and a solid foundation for the university’s information technology infrastructure.
Develop a long-term organizational process and structure to ensure the best utilization of the university’s information technology resources for the future.
